Swimming and water safety
The importance of teaching children to swim has been recognised within education for some time. The most recent National Curriculum for Schools (2014) has continued to reflect this within the Programme of Study for Physical Education
All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.
In particular, pupils should be taught to:
-
swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
-
use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
-
perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
During the Spring term of every year, we take the children in Years 3, 4 & 5 swimming. Depending on the length of the term, they will have between 10 – 12 lessons a year. This year (2023-24), the children had 10 lessons, each lasting 45 minutes.
Summary for Year 6 2023/24 (8 pupils)
Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres: 5/8
Use a range of strokes effectively, for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke: 5/8
